Bonsall, part of the settled rolling foothills in North San Diego County, is located off Highway 76. While bringing lumber through Gopher Canyon over a hundred and thirty years ago, Methodist minister John Bonsall looked around and saw the beauty and potential of the area. With water close by, he planted an orchard in 1879. First called Mount Fairview, the town later changed the name to honor its founder. Bonsall, just east of Camp Pendleton and Oceanside, is one of the unique Southern California communities. Occupying a total of just over 13.5 square miles, a little less than .2 square miles of that is water, leaving a lot of land for the residents.
