At an elevation of 3573 feet, it is an ideal spot to relax after work and on the weekends. You will find the community at the south entrance of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. With an area just slightly under 20 square miles, it borders the Cleveland National Forest on the west and east sides. In the Mountain Empire area of San Diego County, Descanso is west of Pine Valley and east of Alpine. Seventy percent of the homes sell between $200,000 and $400,000. Interstate 8 takes residents to and from the city; it is about two miles from the highway to Descanso, up Japatul Valley Road, also known as California Highway 79. Horseback riding and hiking are popular activities. Camp Oliver is one of the oldest summer camps in the county, with a weeklong camp held for kids 6 to 12 years old. The Laguna Hotshots call the Descanso Fire Station of the US Forest Service home. Local teenagers often join that department or CDF (California Department of Forestry).
