Descanso

Descanso, CA (91916): History and Local Information

A place of rest is certainly a good interpretation for this bedroom community of San Diego County. Descanso is about 50 minutes from downtown San Diego. At an elevation of 3573 feet, it is an ideal spot to relax after work and on the weekends. You will find the community at the south entrance of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. With an area just slightly under 20 square miles, it borders the Cleveland National Forest on the west and east sides. In the Mountain Empire area of San Diego County, Descanso is west of Pine Valley and east of Alpine. Seventy percent of the homes sell between $200,000 and $400,000. Interstate 8 takes residents to and from the city; it is about two miles from the highway to Descanso, up Japatul Valley Road, also known as California Highway 79. It is typically the hottest in August with an average of 88, and the lowest in December, January and February, where 44 is the average. The wettest month is February.

High school students attend Mountain Empire High School in Pine Valley, 11 miles away. The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum near Campo is a draw to the small communities in the area. The Descanso Mercantile has some great souvenirs and the Descanso Junction Restaurant offers great home-style cooking, featuring steak and coconut shrimp on Saturday nights. Horseback riding and hiking are popular activities. Camp Oliver is one of the oldest summer camps in the county, with a weeklong camp held for kids 6 to 12 years old. There is also a teen camp session for 13- 15 years old. Those interested in retreats are welcome to schedule an event, also. The Laguna Hotshots call the Descanso Fire Station of the US Forest Service home. Local teenagers often join that department or CDF (California Department of Forestry).

Descanso, CA (91916): Home Improvement

Small ranches and newer homes need the same home improvement services required by other areas, with installation of new plumbing, replacement of older cabinets and doors that require a carpenter and often an upgrade on windows for better heat and cooling efficiency. The variation in temperature affects the durability of the roof and the length of time outdoor paint remains good. A service provider usually comes from other areas in the county, perhaps from a bid or as a response to one of the free estimates given out.
