A typical San Diego community, Encanto is a blend of many cultures. The community is in San Diego's southeastern section and covers several older, established neighborhoods in the area. Homes prices range from $140,000 to $600,000 for single-family detached homes with an average price of $225,000.
 
Encanto is very easy to access thanks to SR94, the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway to the north, I-805 west, National City off to the south and Lemon Grove on its east. The San Diego Trolley station is conveniently located near the intersection of Market Street and Euclid Avenue. San Diego International Airport is 6 miles away. Weather is pleasant year-round, with total annual rainfall ranging 13.75 inches. The weather ranges between a low of 46 and high of 68 in January to a low of 62 and high of 84 in July.

Like many older areas of San Diego, Encanto is revitalizing with an emphasis on restoration of native vegetation and using space wisely to yield open area, such as the Chollas Creek Enhancement Program. Some of the neighborhoods include Emerald Park, Chollas View, and Broadway Heights. Living in the heart of San Diego adds the benefit of several community colleges, such as Platt College, a mile away and the University of California San Diego, a mile from Encanto. High school students usually attend Morse Senior High School. An area of mesas and canyons at 266 feet sea level, there are beautiful views of the area surrounding Encanto. Typical stores include Kohl's, Walmart, Sam's Club, Big Lots and Target. There are restaurants of every variety. Like all levels of government in the late 1930s and early 1940s, the City of San Diego purchased quite a bit of land to hold for further projects. In 1964, building finished on Encanto Recreation Center, built on land purchased in 1940. A senior center followed in 1966. Two other recreational facilities have opened in the area since. Martin Luther King, Jr Recreation Center includes a weight room, racquetball courts, outdoor tennis courts and a pool. Skyline Hills Recreation Center includes a soccer field, baseball field, outdoor basketball courts and a crafts room.

Encanto has a population of 66,837, with the average household 3.8 people. Approximately 400 residences are vacant at any given time, although it is a popular spot to live because of its proximity to so many activities. There are 17,470 owner occupied homes and 4,865 rented homes. The crime rate is high, with auto theft more than three times the average and the typical gang activity found in most major cities.
 
Most people work in the education and health field and use their own vehicle to travel to and from work. About 15,000 homes were built between 1950 and 1989, with less than a thousand built since. There were slightly over 2,000 built prior to 1950.

There is a heavy demand for professional home improvement contractors and companies in Encanto. Fog, smoke from wild fires, earthquakes and age create the need to upgrade and restructure homes. General contractors have a challenge determining whether it is possible to save a structure or if destruction is the answer. In some cases, the City itself condemns a building or home.
