Mount Laguna (91948): History and Local Information

Mount Laguna is an unincorporated hamlet of 79 people in northeastern San Diego County, 54 miles from San Diego. In the Laguna Mountains, Mount Laguna is on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest. The high area once provided food for the Native Americans, from game, such as deer and birds, and acorns, which were dried and made into flour for bread and a porridge-like meal. With the warm climate below the Laguna Mountains, there was little incentive for the Spaniards to head up into the forest. With ranching came vast amounts of clearing land for pasture and grazing, resulting in flooding and loss of prime soil. The Forest Reserve Act, passed in 1891, helped minimize the slaughter of forests in Northern California, with trees cut down and left lying on the ground. The Federal Government listened to the Southern part of the state and created Forest Reserves to help preserve the watershed. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt created the Cleveland National Forest from two Reserves, making a total of 1,904,826 acres. Over the years, land was take out and returned to local control or made part of another national forest and today, there is about 424,000 acres left. At an elevation of 5,987 feet, the community gets snow in the wintertime. Jeffrey Pine grow in the area around the small community, where the average home price is $140,000 for a two bedroom cabin. I-8 leads to Highway 79, and an exit to the Sunrise Highway takes locals and visitors to the town. There is an annual average of 37 inches of rainfall. January has the winter high temperature of 51 degrees and December averages the lowest winger temperature at 27 degrees. August is the warmest month with an average high of 84 and low of 54 degrees.
