Professional Installation of Recessed Lighting - Why Not DIY

Giving your room dramatic lighting effects and making it visually stunning is easily accomplished when you use recessed lighting. Even if there is no access for you to the attic or spaces above you, there is a way to install recessed lighting in your room. To add to the benefits of installing recessed lighting, you need not rip apart the ceiling in order to accomplish it. In some cases, you'll be looking at just a few holes in the ceiling. No matter how you slice it however, having a professional install your lighting for you is always good advice.

Professional installation of recessed lighting uses some alternative wiring methods that can help you to install many different kinds of lighting within a room.  The real benefits of recessed lighting are that you get the light precisely where you want it. These lights offer a very clean, very minimalistic look to a room and they are also a very modern method of lighting. These types of lights often come with energy efficient housing. When a professional does the installation, your chances for perfect lighting are greater.

Getting the Lighting You Want

It does take a little bit of preplanning to install your recessed lighting precisely as you want it to be. Determining exactly where you want it is necessary in order to get the right cuts in your ceiling the first time. There are typically three steps to installing recessed lighting in your home. You will have to install the housing, which is normally done between the joists of the ceiling and holds all of the wiring, along with the housing for the bulb, or what is known as the socket.

The second component of the lighting is the ceiling trim. This is the only portion of the lighting that is exposed to the view and the trim will cover every edge of the cut that you made to install the housing. Not all types of trim are going to fit every housing type, so you'll need to pay attention and ensure that you get the right housing for the trim or vice versa.

Different kinds of housings will also come with requirements for different lamps. To create some unique special effects in your home, you can purchase different types of lamps to achieve it.

Preparation for Recessed Lighting.

You will need to do some planning in order to determine the right number of lights or lamps that you need to adequately light each room. A few basic rules are going to apply to each of the lights that you install, so you need to keep those in mind as well.

The lights need to be located at least two feet from any existing wall, and you will need space for the installation. The necessary spacing of a six inch recessed lighting fixture is at least seven feet from the last one, when you are working with a standard 8-foot ceiling.

This means taking some time to measure and to ensure that the lighting that you want is going to fit the way that you want it to fit. Correctly assessing the placement of your lights can be done by carefully measuring the ceiling space allotted to you for installation of the recessed lighting and then drawing an x or other mark on the areas where the lighting will be placed.

Review the areas that you would like to be lit up or highlighted, and any areas that are lacking in good light. Sometimes highlighting a reading nook or a piece of sculpture or furniture is good use of recessed lighting, to create a dramatic effect. Plan ahead for what you'd like to highlight and whether you can use this lighting to accomplish that.

Why Use a Professional Recessed Lighting Installer?

In most cases, recessed lighting is not a do-it-yourself project unless you are well versed in lighting and in electrical methodology. Even if you are well schooled in the installation of electrical fixtures, doing it yourself will likely take several days as opposed to having the job accomplished in one day by a professional.  Professional installation is always the best option when installing lighting or electrical fixtures, but it is even more so for overhead fixtures such as these. The reason for this is that, in many cases you're going to be cutting into the ceiling, however slightly, to accomplish the recessed lighting installation. Cutting into the wrong area or cutting into existing electrical lines is something you want to prevent at all costs.

In addition to this, the installation of electrical fixtures in many areas requires that you have a permit to accomplish it. That permit typically calls for a electrical contractor to install the lighting. In those cases where your zoning or other legalities do not require a professional electrician to install your lighting, it is still advisable to use professional help.
